Diabetes accelerated atherosclerosis: novel targets

Karin is the Deputy Head of the Diabetes Department at CCS, Monash University. She is recognised as a clinical scientist and leader in the field of diabetic complications. She holds Professorships at Monash University and University of Hannover, Germany. She has 190 publications, including four papers in Circulation, others in JASN, Circulation Research and Diabetes. She was on the Editorial Board for Diabetologia > 8 years, and serves on the editorial board of Clinical Science and Diabetes and is Deputy Editor Nephrology for the Australian Internal Medicine Journal. Previously, she was President of the AAS 2012 14 She was awarded an Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences fellowship (2018) and a prestigious Leibniz Chair at the German Diabetes Centre, Leibniz Centre for Diabetes Research at the Heinrich Heine University, Duesseldorf, Germany

Novel antioxidant/anti-inflammatory strategies to improve diabetic cardiovascular complications

Judy is Head of the Cardiovascular Inflammation and Redox Biology Laboratory, Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and holds adjunct positions at Swinburne, La Trobe, Melbourne and Monash. Her research aims to improve the lives of diabetic patients by reducing the burden of cardiovascular complications. Her research highlights include the demonstration of a critical role for antioxidant defence in the protection against diabetic vascular complications; the discovery that Nrf 2 activators lessen diabetic vascular disease and the demonstration of a critical role for the NLRP 3 inflammasome in driving diabetes associated atherosclerosis. Her work has been published in Circulation, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diabetology and has been supported by grants from NHMRC, National Heart Foundation, Diabetes Australia, and numerous industry and philanthropic awards.
