Free online seminar Thursday 17th June, 2021 1-2pm AEST.
This seminar will be co-presented by Prof. Len Kritharides and Dr. Maaike Kockx
Prof. Len Kritharides
Platelet thrombin resistance in healthy ageing
Len Kritharides is an Interventional and Consultant Cardiologist. He is Senior Staff Specialist and Head of the Department Cardiology at Concord Repatriation General Hospital, Conjoint Professor in Medicine at the University of Sydney, Head of the Atherosclerosis and Vascular Biology Research Laboratories at the ANZAC Research Institute and Clinical Director of the Cardiovascular Stream of the Sydney Local Health District. He has long standing research interests relating to cellular mechanisms in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. These include studying the function of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) in clearing cholesterol from the body and the regulation of platelet activation in coronary disease.
Dr. Maaike Kockx
HDL function and hyperlipidaemia in schizophrenia
Dr. Maaike Kockx is a cell biologist specialising in the area of Cardiovascular Disease. After her PhD in the Netherlands, in which she investigated the working mechanisms of lipid lowering drugs, she came to Australia where she became interested in various aspect of cholesterol metabolism. She has over 20 years’ experience in research focusing on the regulation of protein secretion and cholesterol homeostasis in macrophage foam cells as well as in various aspects of lipoprotein metabolism.
