Inflammation in dyslipidaemia: Phenotypic changes in monocytes
Dr Heather Medbury is a group leader at the Vascular Biology Research Centre, Department of Surgery, Westmead Hospital and University of Sydney. She has a strong immunology background that has seen her collaborate on projects assessing the role of myeloid cells in a range of medical conditions but primarily her focus has been the role of these cells in cardiovascular disease. Establishing a collaboration with clinical lipidologist A/Prof Stephen Li several years ago, her interest has moved to dyslipidaemia and prevention of CVD. Together with Stephen, they are now focusing on the links between dyslipidaemia and inflammation, specifically in delineating the lipid specific changes that occur in monocytes in dyslipidaemia with an aim to understand these changes can promote atherosclerosis.

Magical monocyte tour: Monocyte skewing in atherosclerosis and other wounds
Dr Helen Williams is a part time Senior Scientific Officer at Westmead Hospital. After being granted her PhD in 2012 focusing on obesity resistant mouse models, Helen began working with Dr Heather Medbury to understand the role of monocytes in cardiovascular disease. She now leads a small group using understanding of monocytes and macrophages in cardiovascular disease, and applying this to other related disease states. Helen holds a research affiliation with The University of Sydney, has obtained funding to present her work at international conferences, and enjoys sharing her work through science outreach activities.
