{"id":848,"date":"2015-11-27T12:45:00","date_gmt":"2015-11-27T01:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.athero.org.au\/fh\/social-and-emotional-health\/"},"modified":"2016-03-11T14:48:49","modified_gmt":"2016-03-11T03:48:49","slug":"social-and-emotional-health","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.athero.org.au\/fh\/patients\/treatment-lifestyle\/social-and-emotional-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Social and emotional health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a strong link between social isolation and lack of quality social support, depression and cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<h3>Social health<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.athero.org.au\/fh\/wp-content\/uploads\/social-network.jpg\" alt=\"Family portrait - Family of four with a cute dog outdoors\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/>People, who have good social support networks (e.g. close family members or friends to confide in and socialise with) have decreased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, are healthier and live longer.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"stress\"><\/a>Emotional health \u2013 stress and depression<\/h3>\n<p>Some stress is a normal part of life.<\/p>\n<p>Continuous ongoing stress can cause chronic depression in some people. Depression is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<p>Depression can go hand-in-hand with cardiovascular disease:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>people who have cardiovascular disease are more likely to suffer from depression. Depression also slows recovery from heart attacks\/surgery and increases the risk of having another heart attack.<\/li>\n<li>people who are depressed may be at greater risk for developing cardiovascular disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Possible mechanisms for the development of cardiovascular disease are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>elevated levels of stress hormones (cortisol and adrenaline) \u2013 stress the heart and arteries by:\n<ul>\n<li>increasing heart rate<\/li>\n<li>increasing blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>causing irregular heartbeats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>increases the clotting of blood \u2013 increased risk of heart attack<\/li>\n<li>increases the levels of the inflammatory protein C-reactive protein (CRP)<\/li>\n<li>people who are depressed are less likely to take their medications regularly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Depression can also cause people to adopt an unhealthy lifestyle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>smoking<\/li>\n<li>overeating<\/li>\n<li>not doing any physical activity<\/li>\n<li>excess alcohol consumption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These make matters worse as they are risk factors for cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1163 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.athero.org.au\/fh\/wp-content\/uploads\/relaxing.jpg\" alt=\"Relaxation time during a wonderful sunny day in summer\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/>Treatments<\/h3>\n<p>Simple things you\u00a0can do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>eat and drink sensibly<\/li>\n<li>if you smoke, stop<\/li>\n<li>do regular physical activity<\/li>\n<li>get enough sleep<\/li>\n<li>recognize good things about yourself<\/li>\n<li>set reasonable expectations for yourself<\/li>\n<li>say \u2018no\u2019 to unreasonable demands<\/li>\n<li>find time to relax every day \u2013 relaxing music, deep breathing, meditation, massage, guided imagery, yoga<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Depression needs to be treated professionally.
