High blood pressure damages the walls of the arteries, increasing the risk of plaque formation and therefore atherosclerosis.<\/li>\n<li>making you overweight or obese (due to excess kilojoules) which can also lead to diabetes and metabolic syndrome<\/li>\n<li>increasing your triglycerides<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>also<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>causes cardiomyopathy \u2013 where heart muscle weakens and cannot contract properly. The heart becomes unable to pump enough blood around the body and eventually fails.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Binge drinking also called \u2018holiday heart\u2019 syndrome can cause:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>heartbeat irregularities called arrhythmias; leading to shortness of breath, chest pain, changes in blood pressure and even sudden death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some evidence suggests drinking a small amount of alcohol can have a protective effect against cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and heart disease. It is recommended that if you don\u2019t currently drink, don\u2019t start just to gain these benefits. A healthy diet, regular exercise and giving up smoking will provide similar health benefits without the risks.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"no-bottom-margin no-top-margin\">*Australian Guidelines for alcohol consumption<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"no-top-margin\">Source: National Health and Medical Research Council<\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"no-top-margin\">What do the guidelines recommend?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>For healthy men and women, drinking <b>no more than two standard drinks on any day<\/b> reduces your risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury over a lifetime.<\/li>\n<li>Drinking <b>no more than four standard drinks on a single occasion<\/b> reduces the risk of alcohol-related injury arising from that occasion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"no-top-margin\">What is a \u2018standard drink\u2019?<\/h4>\n<p>The Guidelines use the idea of a \u2018standard drink\u2019. In Australia a standard drink is any drink that contains 10 grams of alcohol. It is important to note that drink serving sizes are often more than one standard drink (see table below).
