AAS FH Sub-committee's Mission
The mission of the AAS FH sub-committee is to prevent early heart attacks in people with inherited high cholesterol by means of:

identification, diagnosis and treatment of genetic cholesterol disorders for patients and their affected relatives
educating patients, health care providers and government agencies
fostering patient support
encouraging research to increase understanding and treatment of genetic cholesterol disorders
promoting public health efforts fostering collaboration between agencies and other health care providers

At the 2007 European Atherosclerosis Society Meeting, a special symposium "New Modalities in the Management of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia" was presented. The abstracts from this symposium may be viewed by clicking here (file size = 1.25Mb).

MEDPED and AAS

AAS and MEDPED are completely independent.

MEDPED is an international collaborative program, accredited by the World Health Organistation and coordinated by the University of Utah, the aims of which are to improve detection of inherited disorders of cholesterol which affect 1 in 350 of the population.

If you have been contacted by MEDPED, it is important not to be alarmed. You have been contacted because a family member has been diagnosed with this genetic condition, and in the interests of your own health you are being informed. What steps you take are up to you. MEDPED recommends that you see your local GP to have your cholesterol levels measured. If your results indicate you may have this condition, please contact MEDPED so that we can provide support to you and also ensure other members of your family are screened.
