AAS and Pfizer Awareness Campaign

Community surveys show that there is a general lack of concern about checking blood cholesterol levels. This reflects a lack of awareness of the importance of atherosclerosis and a corresponding greater fear of cancer than coronary disease. To meet this gap in coronary prevention, a National Cholesterol Awareness Campaign employing radio, TV and press media was launched in late February 2008. The campaign reached 5 million people throughout Australia and was endorsed by FH-AAS, given that the overall strategy aimed to increase awareness about hypercholesteroalemia and by implication FH. While population screening for FH is less cost-effective than cascade screening, identifying index cases is the starting point in prevention. Looked at this way, if 5% of the audience reached went to have their cholesterol checked, roughly 500 cases of FH could have been identified nationwide, from which effective cascade screening of close relatives might have yielded another 1000 cases. If all received recommended dietary advice and statin therapy, a significant number of heart attacks could be prevented in the future. While this projection requires to be demonstrated, it was a great initiative by Pfizer that aimed to improve the health outcomes of many Australians. Thanks are also due to members of the AAS executive who commented on and supported the initiative.
